It is estimated that Botswana is home to over 65,000 elephants- the largest population in the world-and during the dry season we may see literally thousands. nicknamed “Serious Big Game Country,” the wildlife experience is stunning, with big cats, leopard, hyena, zebra, plains game, as well as rare wild dogs, serval and caracal. Land and water based explorations take place, plus bush walks.
Botswana is certainly Africa’s best-kept secret. With its abundance of wildlife and scarcity of people, it is a natural paradise “discovered” by the discerning traveller only about a decade ago. The government is environmentally sensitive with a progressive view towards the value of wildlife, further enhancing travelers’ experiences.
The country is also home to an astonishingly diverse range of glorious landscapes: the Okavango Delta, the world’s Big Game, Splendid Isolation And nocturnal forays with our guides are especially rewarding. Jack’s guides are zoologists and geologists (many working on Ph.Ds) who colorfully instruct in the nuances of the desert and the adaptation of its denizens.
The Bushmen of the Kalahari are also an important part of our stay-Jack’s is one of the few places on earth where travelers come in contact with this rapidly vanishing culture.
Captivating and mysterious, we’ll be happy with ourselves for having chosen a safari that featured the Kalahari. Then we wing our way to the Selinda Spillway, adjacent to Chobe National Park.
And then there are the numerous pleasures of our authentic tented camp… especially as we sit at its wildly romantic bar watching nightfall over the timeless African sky. And finally, majestic Victoria Falls. Lying on Botswana’s northern border with Zambia, to miss it would be scandalous.
Yet once nestled into Tongabezi, our exquisite hostelry located a few miles upstream, we might actually consider not ever leaving its sublime comfort and tranquility.
Dolce far niente…sweet to do nothing! Except, of course, game watch by canoe, dip into the rock-hewn pool, try the grass tennis court, angle for tiger fish, visit the village and handicraft market, or read on our private deck over the Zambezi while sipping cool drinks silently conveyed by our personal butler.
And then perhaps-once we’ve had our fill of these quiet pleasures-we will pay tribute to the world’s most astonishing natural spectacle…that mile-long, thundering, crashing, gripping, thrilling, grandest cascade of all on earth, Victoria Falls. It takes our breath away.
But for that matter, so will the entire journey throughout the bounty of Botswana.
